It’s Wednesday. There are 733 days until the 2028 elections. A night of many firsts, Democratic leadership better wake up and Mike Little Johnson calls it quits.
Are you testing how well we're functioning this morning after too little sleep, perhaps too much champagne to celebrate, and nowhere near enough coffee yet this morning? Or maybe all of the above pertains to you guys :-) Today's newsletter, please, already read yesterday's. You guys rock, but would love to see your perspective on the elections.
Thank you thank you thank you for being such an important voice for so many of us. When I started reading your newsletter, it was a year ago, and it was SO EXCITING just to watch that days-to-election number go to zero, and with such GLORIOUS results. I think we will all take at least one day to revel in this success, and tomorrow we roll up our sleeves and get back to work. We love you fellas dearly!
One of the things that I keep reading today is from (probably Republican) NYT commentors, as an example, who think that Democrats' wins were flukes, and the only reason that Democrats won is because they weren't Trump -- in an election that was about Trump, or at least in their view.
I call full-on BS about that POV. You don't win in Iowa or Georgia or South Carolina or Texas as flukes. Same goes for NC, but to a slightly lesser degree.
For the first time in as long as I can remember, Democrats:
1. Had a cohesive platform (affordability), which if you think about it was actually a gimme to run on, but we've failed to seize the moment before
2. Didn't get pigeonholed (LBGT, trans rights as examples) no matter how hard Republicans tried
3. Had compelling and interesting (yet diverse!) candidates; we were told that we needed to run mainstream (white, male) candidates to win after the 2024 election -- WRONG
4. Made themselves available to both the public AND to both MSM and alternative news outlets
5. Compelled voters to actually show up
And finally, Maine. I am a resident of Maine, and a few short months ago yard after yard was adorned with Platner signs. When Platner finally imploded, I thought that it was over. It felt like the POTUS debacle in the 2024 election all over again, wherein voters who were angry about Platner's ouster would refuse to show up. Yet, we leaned into early voting (city hall was packed on the day that my wife and I went) and showed Susan Collins the door, and Troy Jackson ran an unspectacular but highly regimented campaign to make treasure out of trash. Remarkable.
They did not get distracted by culture wars. It was beautiful to see. I think the flashiest candidate might have been El-Sayed, but he needed to be. Good people ran, and good people won.
I agree with you 100%. El-Sayed was intriguing to me, the racist nonsense thrown at him was deplorable (there's that word again), and I think that he's both a practical guy and a proud American. PUMPED that he won!
What a night! Strange feeling - hopeful and optimistic. Here in Rhode Island we elected a female governor, female attorney general, female lieutenant governor, and our incumbent rep Seth Magaziner easily beat his J6 MAGAt opponent.
So grateful to everybody who fought for this. The citizens of Minneapolis and elsewhere, everyone who honked and whistled at and recorded and protested ICE and put themselves in harm's way, the person in the frog costume and everyone who followed in Portland, the handful of politicians who spoke up loudly, the protesters and Boomers out just about *every* weekend reminding people we cannot accept this as normal, the people doing community organizing and support, and the alternative media who recognized the failure of the corporate media and stepped in to make sure that not just facts, but compassion and decency, have a voice. We've got a long way to go and a lot of work to do still, but thank you all. 🫡
I've had a lot on my mind lately that is not election related so last night I realized there was no way I was going to even make it to 9. So I went to bed.
Getting up was like Christmas Day as a kid as I scoured through the results. It has been a long time since most of those I voted for actually won. Hooray for Ohio kicking Vivek to the corner, and putting Sherrod back in office where he belongs. Also for breaking the stranglehold the Republicans have had on this state.
OTOH, my deeply red county voted as usual, re-electing many of the local clods again, so I can sympathize with people in Alabama.
I couldn't go to sleep. Work night but I was up until maybe 2AM or so? Probably PTSD because after the last election when I went to sleep I had *awful* nightmares. Although they didn't start until I woke up...
I can understand, believe me. 2024 was like that for me. But between the demise of DST & an overworked mind I realized that all the pundits and commentators were going to give me PTSD this time around. I get up around 4 normally, this am I was up at 2.
As a blue dot in a red state, FL, I didn’t appreciate the way you called out our state for not trying. Both Nixon and Jolly were up at one point and both only lost by a narrow margin. We tried hard to get them over the finish line and the whole state is not a lost cause.

Woke up to a new gov announcement and I’m so happy. “I’m Joe Lombardo” is toast.
Hakeem Jeffries needs to stop listening to consultants, and needs to read the room.

At least Husted has a future as an ass model.
Lololol BC., But first he’s going to have to have Trump surgically removed from it.
Enjoy the day.
Just a quick edit. The transgender person was elected in Alabama not Mississippi. We are still holding out for Mr Cullom!!!!
We did it! I'm so proud of everyone who fought to end MAGA.
You guys are hilarious,
and I'm glad we are all on the same side.
Mike Johnson can pick up his toys and go home.
Yes! So many people stepped up and fought relentlessly.

This seems like yesterday’s edition.
Looks like substack has a glitch over email but should appear updated
It definitely is, they must be so jubilant about last night's results that they forgot to update the main text body for today!
