It was the late Mitch McConnell who said after the 2010 midterms that Americans had issued President Barack Obama a “national restraining order.”
McConnell was a racist, obstructionist piece of shit of course, but he sure gave us a good idea.
In the last week two things became very clear — 1. Trump is planning to expand and accelerate his idiotic war against Iran after the midterms and 2. Neither the Republican-controlled Senate nor House will do anything to stop him or even slow him down.
Republican Sen. Jon Husted is the clearest example of this. While the fake moderates like Susan Collins voted for Senate Democrats’ effort to limit Trump’s war powers against Iran last week, Husted voted against it. Just days earlier, Husted, facing a reelection battle against Sen. Sherrod Brown, said it was time for the war to come to “end as quickly as possible.”
His vote says a lot more than the horseshit coming out of his mouth.
There are countless reasons this country needs to issue Trump a national restraining order. From his boundless corruption to his cruelty toward states that had the gall not to vote for him, Trump is an active threat to the people of the United States of America. And a Democratic Congress is the last chance to put a check on him.
This is perhaps most clear when it comes to Iran.
Trump’s stupid war has to go down as one of America’s greatest foreign policy blunders. And we are the Michael Jordan of foreign policy blunders.
Gas is at record highs, American soldiers and Iranian children are dead and neither Trump nor his cult of kiss-asses can tell anyone why we’re doing it except to stop a nuclear program that was supposedly “obliterated” last year.
Despite all of this and poll after poll predicting their doom, Republicans keep going along with every last bit of it. Iran isn’t yet as costly in either money or human life as Iraq was but if Republicans are allowed to keep rubberstamping Trump’s bloodthirsty whims, then it can get there or even worse in a hurry.
The Supreme Court is corrupt and broken. Mike Johnson would happily eat a bowl of Trump’s feces and then ask for more. John Thune is weaker than McConnell. There is nobody left to be a check on a demented monster who believes his own lies and thinks nothing of more bloodshed.
So if America truly hates this war and wants to do something about it, they need to vote for Democrats.
We wish it was more obvious than that. We wish that Trump sending masked government thugs to murder innocent Americans in the streets was enough. We wish that the knowledge that we’re running black sites for torturing migrants was enough. We wish that the destruction of the East Wing, the love affairs with brutal dictators and the outright theft of American tax dollars was enough.
But if high gas prices are what it takes to finally see through Trump’s bullshit for some people, then we’ll take it. And you can bet your ass those prices are going to continue to skyrocket if Trump is left unchecked. If Republicans were to somehow come out of this election still in power, then both they and Trump would know that even pain at the pump wasn’t enough to get America to change course. They will have no incentive to stop.
So let’s make the case clearly and loudly — a vote for Republicans is for more war, more dead American troops and more money at the gas station. And the only chance we have to stop it is a national restraining order.
We’re sure it won’t be the first time Trump has heard those words.
Can’t agree with you more. The Democratic Party is far from perfect at the moment, but it’s critically important that everyone vote for democratic house and senate candidates that are committed to redress and reform!
