If you haven't been following the Lindsay Clancy trial, then maybe refrain from making snap judgements. Seriously. You know NOTHING about this woman who is so clearly being framed for murder and will never walk again. What recourse does she have???? You think she's partisan? She's not. She's desperate. It'd take you maybe 10-15 minutes to get the gist of what's happened to her and why her case is so alarming and so divisive. The real question is WHY HAVEN'T YOU been following this trial???? The case has been a bellwether to shine a light on how little this country (and you two) cares about a woman's mental health postpartum. Shame on you. Seriously. DO BETTER!
I am so sorry. When I woke up at 5 am to go through the dozens of news stories I collected over Labor Day weekend, I didn’t even think to check with you on what I should be following and which jokes I’m allowed to make. I would go get our manager for you but we don’t have one.
I am a huge fan of sarcasm and snark, well and swearing; this unfortunately misses the mark in so many ways. Lindsay Clancy's trial has stripped bare the lack of mental health support offered to women post partum, the whole progression from feeling overwhelmed to those who suffer from post partum psychosis. Her medical team failed her, and "law and order" totally failed her. If you had followed any of the trial or spent more than 2 minutes on this you would have realized there is nothing here to joke about.
I do not blame her attorney for requesting a pardon - that does not matter since it is not a federal case. Not all presidential pardon requests are for political gain.
I did not sit on the trial and hear all the evidence so I'm trying not to judge. I think it is natural to want to punish anyone for harming children.
I have not had children, so I cannot understand postpartum. But I cannot imagine having to live with those regrets.
I'm not sure if you realize how incredibly insensitive and tone deaf that kind of reply actually is--not to me, I don't give a f*ck what your opinion of me is--but of women in general and how difficult it is to stand by and watch men not be judged for the horrific crimes they commit, but women are ALWAYS held accountable, even when they're being framed. How incredibly disappointing. And immature. You had a chance, Sam, to take a moment and reflect, and consider that maybe you really missed the mark with your "joke" which, let's be honest wasn't a joke at all. It was a judgment for a woman you admittedly know absolutely zero about. You've missed the bigger context here by a mile--and here I thought you were smarter than that. Shame. But thank you for letting me know I can now unsubscribe and move on and devote the time that I normally took to read through your newsletter to devote to Politics Girl instead. I hear she just joined Substack. Can't wait to upgrade to a paid subscription for more grownup and relevant content!

My best friend's daughter took her life by suicide a week post birth. Medication given her has a two week window to fully be effective. She went into psychiatric care but checked herself out after 24 hours. Her medical support staff were stunned at her rapid actions. Both cases were identified as extreme post partum psychosis. 60 Minutes did a feature a year or so ago pre Bari Weiss on the topic. Her photo was one of the many used of women who succumbed .

I also haven't followed the Clancy trial. However, I know that many women suffer from severe postpartum depression. Why didn't her husband do anything. Isn't he as guilty as she is because he didn't protect her by getting her help and thereby protecting their children? There is a woman sitting in prison for killing her 5 children. Her husband knew that she suffered from severe depression after giving birth to each child. Yet, he impregnated her again. Why isn't he sitting in prison for aiding and abetting in this tragedy. Why do men get a pass and only women pay the price?
