But what I can say is that I never decided to be straight, so it makes sense to me that people didn't 'decide' to be gay or trans, they just are. All I know is that I don't have to understand it to show people respect, and that includes upholding their rights which are guaranteed under our Constitution.
There's a huge difference between being homosexual and being transsexual. One is a completely normal variant of sexuality, and the other is an invention.
But I totally agree with you that the fundamental responsibility is to show respect. Our Constitution makes that somewhat more concrete and easier by specifying exactly what individuals are owed by and entitled to from our government. Unfortunately, there is a current wish among some to ignore the Constitution. And a SCOTUS that is perfectly fine with that. And a Republican Congress that is too terrified to do its job.
