NY Dem leader is why we have a second trump presidency. Support the people! Support Mamdami!

The DNC and folks like the NY Dems leader work hard to keep folks like Cuomo in office. They spend your donations on undermining folks the majority of people want. Who offer real solutions to problems like housing, schools, healthcare. Dem leaders are puppets of AIPAC and corporate lobbyists. They gave us the mess around Biden's run and did not allow an honest primary to find the 2024 presidential candidate who could win. In 2016 they bent over backwards to undermine Bernie Sanders, though he appeared to be the people's choice and could have likely beaten Trump. Folks became totally disillusioned with a half baked party leadership who did not represent them. This has led to the rise of Trump and apathy of dems.

I don’t like Mamdami at all. He scares me. The problem is that there’s no one else to vote for. If I lived in NY, this would be a major problem for me

Why does it scare you that Mamdani actually cares about working people? They called FDR a socialist because he created the social security system so working people wouldn't starve when they were not able to work anymore. They called FDR a socialist because he created jobs to help the country come back after the depression which was created by the former republican president pushing tariffs!

Because Dem leadership, billionaires, and trump are spending tens of millions to scare you. They so badly wish to keep the status quo, to keep working Americans down and keep the exploitation going. To prevent regulations which protect workers and consumers and limit corporate profits. AIPAC controlled politicians and mouthpieces are trying to scare you. Please read more about what Mamdami is offering before you make a decision.

Ms Getz, you never answered Ms Wiersma's question. I'm curious, too.

Ms Getz, you were right to react to Mr Gilbert as you did. He has no business guessing what scares you about Mamdani. And his guess was an insult to you.

So Ms Wiersma, and I, and Mr Gilbert have now all asked you the same question: what scares you about Mamdani. Mr Gilbert has withdrawn his impolite swipe, and he just wants to know. He asked you "kindly." So...? (Maybe you've detected something the rest of us missed, and you'll help us better understand the NYC Mayor's race, and the candidates in it. We're just asking.) Although you did say there was "no one else to vote for," so whatever it is that scares you about Mamdani is not apparently going to prevent you from voting for him. I don't live in NY, so I can't vote in this election at all. I'm just curious.

I have not replied yet, because I haven’t had the time to sit and reply properly. Please know that my knowledge of him is somewhat limited, but my main concerns are with him and his feelings about the Jews and Israel. He has been very supportive of BDS for many years, even before the October attack by the Palestinians, and he feels that Israel should not be a Jewish country. Israel allows a person of any religion to live within its borders unlike so many of the Arab countries which surround it. Where is his criticism of those countries? An Arab can live in Israel but a Jew (and in many cases Christians) would never be allowed to live in those countries. My parents are Holocaust survivors and most of my family perished due to acute antisemitism. That is why we need Israel. If we had an Israel then, who knows how many lives could have been saved.

I hope this clarifies things for you and I think it’s unfortunate that in this day and age, a Jewish person must still be petrified about antisemitism. Of you don’t agree with what’s going on between Israel and Hamas go ahead and speak your mind. But, don’t attack Jews around the world for this’s territorial war.

And that’s what scares me about Mamdani. Jew hatred.

Fred Jonas's avatar

Thank you for the very generous reply. And I'm very sorry about your family.

I grew up Jewish even though I never believed there was any such thing as "god." Eventually, I gave up calling myself Jewish. I didn't have the entry criterion, and it didn't make any sense. I was never opposed to any group, and I always tried to understand various people's feelings about things. I agreed that Israel had value as a safe home for the Jews, but the choice of the middle part of Palestine was complicated. It was not uninhabited, and 1M Palestinians, probably a notable proportion of them nomads, were displaced to make room for the Jews. Maybe one of the other places would have been better, and they were mostly or all in Africa. But the Jews wanted what used to be Judea and Samaria, lobbied hard for it, and the rest of the world gave it to them.

It's also important to note that after WWI, the Arab world was reboundaried, with leaders and even names of some countries being changed. The Arab world was very angry at the West, and since it was the West that imposed Israel on the Middle East, they were mad at Israel, too. Arabs had gotten along well with Jews, and vice versa, and I think they just felt it was another imposition and insult, and a loss. As you know, some wars were fought over this early on: the Yom Kippur war and the Six Day war, for example.

There have been efforts to negotiate peace, such as Carter's successful effort between Israel and Egypt, and Clinton's attempt between Israel and the PLO.

But Israel has been on an unrelenting path to destroy the Palestinian states (West Bank and Gaza Strip) with constant help from the US. There are many illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, from which settlers attack civilian Palestinians, and Israel has made life difficult in the Gaza Strip. No one stops them. The Israelis, and Jews in general, like to think the problem started on 10/7/23, but that was a moment of retaliation.

It's also worth noting that in my Jewish experience (Hebrew school, Saturday school, Bar Mitzvah, etc), there was always a disturbingly singular focus on the Holocaust. It was as if being Jewish meant being a victim of the Germans. But for millennia before that, the Jews were thrown out of various places, including Judea and Samaria, and a number of their holidays are about one victimization or another. In the '50s or '60s, the Coasters had a song written by Lieber and Stoller (Jewish), and it was called "Charlie Brown." A recurring refrain line was "why's everybody always pickin' on me." Jews never ask that question. They never wonder if they're doing something to infuriate or provoke everyone else. They just poke, in whatever ways they do it, and complain when someone pokes back. A '60s Tom Lehrer (Jewish) song contains the line "everybody hates the Jews." The Jews don't seem to understand what everyone has against them.

I was never anti-Zionist until recently, and I've about lost my ability to ward off being anti-Semitic. I have an Israeli-American friend who approves of everything Israel does to the Palestinians. He claims he was previously opposed to the illegal settlements in the West Bank, but he's no longer opposed. He claims Israel/IDF is strategic in sparing innocent civilians. When it is pointed out to him that innocent civilians are the substantial majority of people the Israelis kill, he either claims this is a "lie, lie, nothing but lies," or he says Hamas, which is largely decimated, uses civilians as human shields. He talks about hostages held by Hamas, and he can't acknowledge that Israel has had opportunities to get those hostages back (already got back half of them), but Israel is only interested in wiping out Palestinians, and isn't interested in Israelis held hostage. They got back half of them in the last week of November, 2023, during a ceasefire to which they agreed. All they had to do was extend the ceasefire, or make it permanent. They had already killed many more innocent Palestinians than Hamas killed innocent Israelis.

So your bottom line concern is that you think Mamdani hates Jews. I've heard no evidence that that's true. But you don't ask the Coasters' question, either, or give any thought to Tom Lehrer's refrain. Why does everybody hate the Jews? Is it something they're doing, and they ought to stop doing it?

There has not been a removal of a broadcast license since the 1980’s and that was a local station involved in bribery. The only reasons fcc does revoke are falsification on app or criminal behavior. The reason they don’t revoke for anything else is that it is very complicated legally and would be tied up for years in court.
