Here is how I am dealing with it: as an athlete, you have to compete with the country where you have citizenship/eligibility. Most Olympic athletes born in the US have no choice but to compete with the United States if they want to go to the Olympics, and a small handful that are eligible through family relationships or dual citizenship do choose to compete for other countries.
Competing through the team you're permitted to join is not an endorsement of that government's policies or the government itself: it's complying as part of the only system available to you to compete as a world class athlete. The expectation that they will all be rah-rah for the US is not being embraced by some who have spoken out. You certainly don't see as many wrap themselves in the flag as we have seen in times past.
Note 8: So what's the count so far? Wow I'm underwhelmed, two men & one woman out- Larry Summers, Brad Karp & now this Kathy Ruemmler. Bet they got some impressive golden parachutes
