The crowd walked toward the Lincoln Memorial and assembled on the hill. Batons , gas canisters and growling dogs didn’t do the trick, so the mounted cops charged up the hill on horseback. The crowds dispersed very quickly. And I don’t remember any protesters who came armed in those days. Nor do I remember the DC police threatening to shoot any protester.
