This Halloween, Haley Stevens is going as a Republican.
That’s the only way to explain her relentless attacks on the actual U.S. Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, and her desperate pleas for attention just days away from a critical election.
Stevens, along with other prominent Democrats, have decided to ignore the will of the Democratic voters who chose El-Sayed and instead keep campaigning against him, trying to torpedo his campaign in the last days of the midterms and provide Trump with another rubber-stamp vote in the U.S. Senate.
We won’t forget it.
At this point, El-Sayed is running against Trump’s disgusting anti-Muslim bigotry, the Democratic establishment’s anti-Muslim bigotry (and some sour grapes) and the mainstream media’s anti-Muslim bigotry. While the polling has consistently shown him leading Republican Mike Rogers, Abdul will need a miracle to get past the despicable forces who have unified against him because of his religion.
Sadly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this movie. When Barack Obama ran for president, there were plenty of white liberals who were proud to announce their opposition to him because they just couldn’t trust him for some reason. It was offensive then, and it’s offensive now.
Maybe we’re the ones who are confused. Maybe we just fundamentally misunderstand what it means to be a Democrat.
We thought we were the party that is welcoming to all religions because we believe this country is a place where you’re free to believe what you want. We thought we were the party that is opposed to bigotry in all its forms. We thought we were the Big Tent party that welcomes people of all faiths and backgrounds, ya know, like America is supposed to.
We still believe those things even if some of the leaders of our party don’t. We still hope to see Abdul win on Tuesday and go to the Senate where he can fight for lower prices, getting money out of politics and getting Medicare for All. We hope that Michigan voters will ignore the onslaught of bigotry Abdul is facing and send him to Washington.
What Abdul has had to deal with has been shameful. In a recent interview with the New Yorker, the candidate became emotional when talking about his wife and two young daughters. He talked about how the FBI had alerted him to threats against him and his family but he hadn’t been able to warn his wife before the girls walked down the street to some neighbors.
“I’ll be honest, I’ve had a recurring dream that I”m going to get — I’m going to die young, my whole life,” he said.
We are not surprised Republicans are happy to put this man and his family in danger. But we are damn disappointed to see Democrats joining in.
Stevens and her fiancé clearly feel differently. They have done a media tour — including a hit on Fox and Friends Saturday — to attack Abdul as antisemitic. He refused to jump through the hoops they put in front of him, so he must be evil. He refused to be apologetic or ashamed of his faith so he must be antisemitic. Abdul, meanwhile, has kept showing up for Michigan voters and fighting back against the racist smears he’s been forced to endure from all sides.
We’re grateful to Democrats like Mallory McMorrow, who fought Abdul like a tiger during the primary but has worked her ass off to help him in the general.
In a way, we are envious of Stevens and the other Democrats who are spending this final weekend attacking Abdul.
It must be nice to not care about ICE terrorizing communities and shooting American protesters. It must be nice to not care about those poor dead kids in Iran. It must be nice to not care about the people who have lost their healthcare under Trump. It must be nice to not be one of the people under attack from his Justice Department. It must be nice to be able to afford gas and ground beef these days. Because anyone backing Mike Rogers, clearly doesn’t give two shits about any of those things.
We need to stop Trump and his cult. That’s what this election has always been about. And if you’re not on board with that, then stop calling yourself a Democrat.
And STOP asking us for money or votes because you’ll never get either from us again.
We vote Blue no matter who as long as they are committed to saving democracy from Trump and his thugs. We thought that’s what everyone on our side was supposed to do. We suspect that’s how most of us feel.
But just in case you need the extra motivation:
Piss off the media. Piss off the establishment. Vote Blue.
And fuck the haters.
