Today’s Big Stuff 7.19.24 | Trump’s sweaty boring BS night
Happy Friday. There are 108 days until the general election. Trump’s sweaty boring BS night, some ominous words from the orange team and Biden’s team says he isn’t going anywhere.
Be advised: This newsletter uses profanity. Because bullcrap just isn’t a strong enough word when talking about Trump.
Note: We did it! We made it to the weekend! Even more importantly, we made it through the menacing and moronic poop-flinging dumbnuts circus that was the Republican convention and that never-ending tranq dart to the forehead that was Trump’s speech.. And since the air is still quite thick with bullshit, we wanted to take a second to remind everyone what this election is about.
It ain’t about Trump’s ear, it ain’t about Biden’s age and it sure as shit ain’t about Hulk fucking Hogan. As Dr. Jill Biden and Hadley Duvall remind us with this ad, this election is about much much bigger stuff. More: Twitter
Love Biden? Hate Biden? Want him to run? Want him to step aside? Cool with us. But we aren’t forgetting that the stakes are what matter most here, and we know you’re not either. So the goal and the objective remain the same — beat the orange asshead criminal who overturned Roe, attacked the Capitol and accepted the Republican nomination last night. Sound good? Cool. Let’s go. Y’all have a blessed day and a kick-ass weekend.
Note two: We were gonna wear bandages on our right ears last night but then we remember that’s fucking stupid.
Note three: Is Trump still speaking? We fell asleep. He knows what that’s like.
Note four: Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was convicted in a Russian courtroom this morning and sentenced to 16 years in prison. It’s important to remember that Trump keeps suggesting he has a secret deal with Putin to get Evan home. Seems like that’s something that shouldn’t wait. More: CNN
Note five: Y’all, we are so grateful to you for helping us grow on Substack. We’ve gotta keep it up though. Because we have to become the media so we can replace this silly shit… More: Twitter
Note six: President Obama is telling folks he is concerned about President Biden’s chances of winning. That folks like Obama and Pelosi keep leaking this suggests they are pretty darn concerned. More: ABC 7
Note seven: But on the flipside, here is a letter from 1,400 Black women offering their full support for Joe and condemning the lack of support from the party. More: The Hill
Note eight: Something Trump actually said last night — “The election result, we’re never going to let that happen again.” And yet several newspapers went with “unity” bullshit.
Note nine: We obviously hate to see our party divided and struggling, but the silver lining is that it’s cool to see VP Harris finally getting the attention she deserves. More: CNBC
Note 10: Republicans want a national abortion ban. The national press might not care about that, but we should. More: Twitter
Note 11: DAMNIT! Republican judges have once again blocked Biden’s student loan plans. Didn’t the Supreme Court just rule that presidents can do whatever they want? Or is that just for orange asshole presidents? More: Associated Press
Note 12: Bob Newhart and Lou Dobbs died yesterday. We’re really gonna miss Bob Newhart. More: NPR
Note 13: We’re still thinking about Matt Gaetz’s face. We might never get over it.
Note 14: Sen. Jon Tester of Montana says President Biden shouldn’t run. Jamie Raskin suggested the same. More: CNN, CNN II
Note 15: Joe Biden’s policies are making life better for the people who hate him. More: Twitter
Note 16: We sure do love Missy Elliott, so we think it’s so cool that her music is being beamed into space. The aliens are gonna think we’re pretty cool. More: People
Note 17: What the hell is wrong with Van Jones? Like in general, what is wrong with that dude? More: Huff Post
Note 18: Just a reminder that one of the men who introduced Trump last night uses the n-word and the other one hits his wife. More: Yahoo News
Note 19: For today’s Happy Ending, we give you the immortal words of the great John Lewis. They sure are helpful in moments like this…
Note 20: And on that much-needed note, let’s go do some news! We sure hope y’all are hanging in there. We know things are messed up right now. But just remember that things have been messed up for a while and you’re still looking sexy as all hell. Love y’all!
Yawn City
Trump set a goddamn record for the longest convention speech ever, delivering a boring, sweaty, rambling at at times vicious diatribe that the news media struggled to praise. It was awful. Adam watched the whole thing. Sam tapped out and switched to basketball at the one hour mark. Here’s what we want to know — Trump used part of his speech to attack “Crazy Nancy” Pelosi and yet we’re still reading stories about his tone and unity. Why? Anyway, that shit was so boring that people on the convention floor actually fell asleep. More: Huff Post
Uh-oh
There were some things said at the convention that the press might not care about but the rest of us should. First, there was that weird thing Trump said about never letting a losing election ever happen again. And then there was this from Trump campaign manager Chris LaCivita that really got our attention and spooked the shit out of us… More: Politico
So what are we doing?
The chorus of calls for President Biden to step aside has gotten louder. Biden’s top allies seem to want him to drop out even as people like AOC and Bernie say he should stay in. It’s a real mess, and we have no idea what’s going to happen next. Biden campaign adviser Jen O’Malley Dillon said this morning that Biden “is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump.” Dillon and the campaign put out a memo saying they see a “path forward.” Hopefully we will get this all settled this weekend. Because we seriously can’t spend another week doing this shit while the press is kissing Trump’s ass. More: NBC News
Today’s clips
President Joe Biden feels personally hurt and betrayed by the way so many Democrats, including some of the party’s top leaders, have left him hung out to dry as he faces the biggest crisis of his political career, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. More: NBC News
A widespread technology outage grounded flights, knocked banks offline and media outlets off air on Friday in a massive disruption that affected companies and services around the world and highlighted dependence on software from a handful of providers. More: Associated Press
Guys, just venting here. One of the things that pisses me off more than most things are the people whispering about Biden stepping aside. Obama, Pelosi, etc. The thing is, those people will not be hurt by the results of this election; they’re insulated with money, power, influence. The rest of us are not, so I’m still #TeamBiden.
Very simple questions no one asked anyone at the RNC and never will in this campaign:
1) Virtually every speaker said “they” tried to kill Trump. Who are “they”?
2) Why did Trump need a new running mate? What happened to that Mike Pence guy?
And for our wealthy media class:
3) Trump was sad he lost the 2020 election and sent a mob to kill Congress so he wouldn’t have to stop being president. What exactly did you hear in this four-day “unity” convention that leads you to believe he’s not going to do it again?
